The 2006 Recioto della Valpolicella Classico La Roggia is a powerful wine that explodes onto the palate with tons of fruit. This focused, vibrant wine is still much too young to deliver its full potential, so several years of cellaring seem warranted. As always, the aromatics require some aeration to clean up and find their focus. Still, the 2006 Recioto is impressive for its power and fine overall balance. Stylistically, this is one of the more moderately sweet Reciotos on the market. Anticipated maturity: 2011-2021.

2005 SPERI AMARONE VIGNETO MONTE SANT'URBANO - PUNTI 91+

The 2005 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico Vigneto Monte Sant'Urbano is one of the standouts in this difficult Amarone vintage. The wine possesses remarkable clarity and precision in a medium-bodied, focused style. Suggestions of amarena cherries, menthol, spices and minerals emerge with air, adding further complexity. The Monte Sant'Urbano is one of the more accessible Amarones in its medium-bodied, lithe structure, but the overall balance here is beyond question. This is a wonderful effort from Speri. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020.

2006 SPERI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SANT'URBANO - PUNTI 89

The single-vineyard 2006 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Vigneto Sant'Urbano reveals terrific purity and focus in its expressive core of perfumed black fruits. This mid-weight Valpolicella is classy and elegant all the way through to the finish. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2014.

2007 SPERI VALPOLICELLA CLASSICO SUPERIORE RIPASSO - PUNTI 88

Speri's 2007 Valpolicella Classico Superiore Ripasso is a very pleasant, soft Valpolicella with pretty notes of perfumed red fruit and sweet herbs, all of which come together in a soft, pleasing style. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2012.
